This renovation project provided a unique opportunity to renew a large and strategically located building on the campus of the University of Mississippi, and to give it a new south front. The challenge was to adapt the two existing floors, which had only an 11-foot floor-to-floor height, into administrative offices, and to insert a third floor into the volumes previously used for gymnasiums.
The solution developed by Howorth & Associates Architects in joint venture with CDFL/Ltd. included the development of an interior atrium, which introduces natural light into the heart of the building and enables the users to orient themselves and get access to the services they need.
The structural challenge was to introduce an additional structural system with no impact on the original. The HVAC systems also have to provide outside air and distribute chilled and heated air and water throughout the building within the minimal floor-to-floor heights.
