Sited only two blocks from the historic "Square" in Oxford, the Lafayette County Jail and Law Enforcement Office building is designed to be reminiscent of the county's original Italianate jail which was demolished in the early 1960's.
The original jail, a substantial background feature in the feature film of William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust, is fondly recalled among the townspeople. This new building provides new offices for the sheriff’s department, 180 high-security beds, and state-of-the-art detention and security systems in the town's historical idiom at a cost of less than $90 per square foot.
