Assessment & Repairs at Civil War National Cemeteries
Thirteen Sites in the Southeastern United States
Completion Date: 2009

Howorth and Associates Architects was selected in March of 2008 as specialized consultants to visit, assess, evaluate and recommend repairs to perimeter walls at thirteen Civil War-era National Cemeteries throughout the Southeastern United States. All of the properties are listed in the National Register of Historic Places; two are designated as National Historic Landmarks. The walls are of a variety of masonry construction, including brick, rubble, stone, and cement plaster, with construction dating from 1870-1885.

The professional work includes visiting and surveying each site to ascertain the degree of deterioration and damage at each site; to evaluate the priority of necessary repairs; to sample and analyze materials, particularly mortar, to ensure compatible and appropriate repairs and re-pointing; to prepare construction cost estimates; and to deliver a report summarizing these findings for each site.

The rehabilitation work must comply with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and must be coordinated through the State Historic Preservation Officer in each state or jurisdiction. The specific National Cemeteries are:

1. Alexandria, Louisiana
2. Port Hudson, Louisiana
3. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
4. Barrancas, Florida
5. Saint Augustine, Florida
6. Beaufort, South Carolina
7. Knoxville, Tennessee
8. Nashville, Tennessee
9. Marietta, Georgia
10. Mobile, Alabama
11. Natchez, Mississippi
12. Raleigh, North Carolina
13. Wilmington, North Carolina
