Rowan Oak, located in Oxford, Mississippi, was the home of writer William Faulkner.  The building is a National Historic Landmark owned by the University of Mississippi.  Since acquisition, the University transferred curatorial responsibility from the English Department to the University Museums.  The University has provided sophisticated new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.  Future plans include the addition of a new William Faulkner Wing to the main Museum building as well as a preservation plan of the landscape and the outbuildings.

Howorth & Associates Architects was selected to  design and administer a $300,000 general construction restoration, funded by a Save America's Treasures grant.  The project addressed the building's structural condition, primarily to reinforce those portions of the building subject to heavy public traffic; it identified and remedied drainage problems to reduce the threat of deterioration due to excessive moisture; it included specific minor renovations to improve the building's physical condition and weatherability; and restored deterioration interior finishes.

The project was completed in July 2004, a month ahead of schedule.
